Unbelievably toxic! - Animal Care Technician The Jackson Laboratory Employee Review

Pros

The benefits and starting salary.

Cons

Oh where to begin. This company has a huge turnover rate. Why? Too many reasons to count. Animal Care workers here are miserable. The physical demands of the job will leave you sore at best. Injures abound. Repetitive work on a concrete floor for hours. Compassion fatigue is a continuous struggle. Ops is constantly understaffed which then in turn, leaves Animal Care Workers struggling to care for the mice in a timely fashion. When a worker is only getting one box every 10-15 minutes, it becomes apparent that staying late, skipping lunch, etc, will be necessary. Especially on a Friday. Also, if you want to be promoted to technician, certain milestones must be met. This company will preach all day about the importance of "quality before quantity" yet one of the milestones is being able to successfully hit certain numbers! That standard applies to everyone, regardless of several factors. There is no equity. Talent should trump speed! This organization is run like a giant high school in my opinion. Nepotism runs rampant here. Leadership never seems to be held accountable for unprofessional behaviors. You will be constantly put into positions where overtime is necessary. Advocating for one's needs will likely get you labeled. HR isn't much help either. Company policies are too rigid. Forget about holidays. Nobody can take time off during a "short week" and hours are expected to be made up, if you DO take a day. All in all, I would avoid. Nothing but smoke and mirrors. Workers should unionize, and the Dept of Labor should definitely make an unannounced visit.

Pros

Good pay and benefits are decent

Cons

Long commutes with tight time accountability due to newer rules. No more leniency for weather or traffic related tardiness that is common in Maine. Constantly changing rules and expectations are making the job impossible. Failure to meet new expectations lead to no finishes or raises or tuition reimbursement. Forced overtime in Ellsworth location with so.e employees being sent from Bar Harbor to cover. Seems like a sinking ship and I would not recommend anyone I liked for a job here.
