Pros

The commitment of direct care staff is inspiring to see. With ABA as a cornerstone of NECC's work, it is well grounded in both science and tempered with compassion. A second goal is research which can be a slippery slope. With over 30 years of data, only now is a clearer picture of effective methods of treatment. Although research and training is more efficient in a specialized school environment, students and their families should strive (when possible) to advocate for a (Public School) inclusion program. In some cases this is available with NECC's partner program.

Cons

Only a small percentage of students with autism get into this school. The one weakness in the current system seems to be competition and not collaboration with similar schools for autism.

Pros

The kids are the best part. It's good for those who have little to no experience. They pay for a masters degree.

Cons

Lead Teachers have no training in managing people. The lead teacher sits at the desk all day on their phone, eating and micromanaging. It's not really a school schedule. You must be present for 8 hours even if the kids are not there, and you have no other work to do. You get only 2 random weeks off in the summer. The pay is not worth it.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. We are grateful for the direct care staff who work with our students every day to bring out their potential. Our lead teachers have many administrative responsibilities, working with each student's team of clinicians, parents, and liaisons that may not be visible to other staff. However, if you have performance concerns about your lead teacher, please share it with your clinical supervisor. Thank you for all you do!
