Pros
This is a company that wants to do the right thing, by it's customers and it's employees. If you show intelligence and creativity and ambition, it is likely to win you the favor of management. The benefits are competitive and work schedules can be flexible depending on the division or department. When asked "what do you like about working for The Standard" I have heard most reply it is the "people" - there are some top quality folks doing their best here!
Cons
As much as this company wants to do the right thing, it can get stuck at the moment of choice in taking the safe route. Innovation is encouraged, but not rewarded. The career advancement path is like many companies stuck in the "be a manager" mentality - no real advancement opportunities for senior individual contributors to move up without stopping what their good at to do personnel management.
