Pros

Travelers is a prudent and disciplined place but far from sleepy or complacent. Prudence and discipline has given it the strength of a market leader. Yet, the place embraces the necessity of change. Residual silo issues remain, as do an element of backward longing employees- but the enterprise move forward and is exciting for those who see the bridge to the land of opportunity.

Cons

Profit margin opportunities in P&C insurance is thin, and to exceed expectations you need a skilled and motivated workforce that is committed to long term investment of time to get it right for the business. For many, that requires great sacrifice of work-life balance. For many who remember a less demanding culture before the St Paul - Travelers merger, those demands are a threat to an order whose failure they refuse to see and whose perpetuation they see as an entitlement. For those who survive and thrive- and there are more than a few- there are rewards.

Pros

We receive continuous training to stay up to date with new state regulations and market trends. My colleagues make the day go by quickly. The benefits are very reasonable. There is room for career growth if you know how to network. I appreciate their consistent push for community volunteer opportunities.

Cons

The personal lines department seems to be falling apart right now. Issues with the internal systems are resulting in underwriters doing multiple jobs and becoming a dumping ground for all agent issues even if they aren't underwriting related. I don't feel that the directors are truly expressing to the senior leadership team the impact that all these issues are having on the mental health and quality of life for the employees that are on the front lines trying to maintain a good reputation for the company. It's sad to see how quickly this department has gone downhill and the amount of quality underwriters that are jumping ship for different departments or different companies all together. What's even sadder it that no one with authority seems to care, or listen, when concerns are brought forth. I truly advise anyone considering applying for any position within the personal insurance department to hold off until things start to change - it's not worth the mental anguish that you'll experience.
