Pros

Great place for those who enjoy quantitative analysis. Travelers measures and tracks everything. Data-rich environment. Lots of challenge to the work, and many opportunities to move within the company -- to try new things. Promote from within. Becoming much more attuned to the power of the voice of the customer. Company is run in a very responsible and financially sound way, so if you perform well and want a long-term career, you can get it here. They REALLY reward based on performance, so if you are good at what you do and use it to make a meaningful difference in Travelers' performance, you will be handsomely rewarded. Great training programs for those right out of school.

Cons

Travelers is still quite clueless about the power behind the voice of the employee. The attitude of the culture (and by this I mean employees as well as management) is : "This is Travelers, if you like it -- great. If you don't, you don't belong here." Seasoned professionals joining mid-career are left on their own devices to get up to speed when they join Travelers. Completely opposite to what is in place for new hires right out of school, Travelers has no onboarding process whatsoever for seasoned hires.

Pros

We receive continuous training to stay up to date with new state regulations and market trends. My colleagues make the day go by quickly. The benefits are very reasonable. There is room for career growth if you know how to network. I appreciate their consistent push for community volunteer opportunities.

Cons

The personal lines department seems to be falling apart right now. Issues with the internal systems are resulting in underwriters doing multiple jobs and becoming a dumping ground for all agent issues even if they aren't underwriting related. I don't feel that the directors are truly expressing to the senior leadership team the impact that all these issues are having on the mental health and quality of life for the employees that are on the front lines trying to maintain a good reputation for the company. It's sad to see how quickly this department has gone downhill and the amount of quality underwriters that are jumping ship for different departments or different companies all together. What's even sadder it that no one with authority seems to care, or listen, when concerns are brought forth. I truly advise anyone considering applying for any position within the personal insurance department to hold off until things start to change - it's not worth the mental anguish that you'll experience.
