Pros

Flexibility in time and management - Very hands off One of the only agencies with staff who at least know somewhat what their agency does Not appropriated so the ability for the agency to be agile in service providing is surely secure going forward Opportunities nationwide The preferable agency for private sector to speak with Training provided Pension, TSP, a solid benefits package to make up for lack of commensurate private sector pay. VPs and senior brokers at major commercial shops clear a fair bit more money, however the phenomenal stability of positions at GSA make up for this compensation to a certain degree.

Cons

The Federal Government as far as I'm aware is full of generally incompetent people who wouldn't survive in the real world. To a lesser extent, that is not exactly the case here, as if you work for GSA, the private sector prefers to deal with GSA but there is still a major skills gap. If I had to estimate, I would say that at last 30% of the job has yet to be automated, it could be smaller. Inflexible in hiring decisions, veteran's preference is a major flaw in federal hiring as the cases of successful former enlisted people is limited in scope. Bottleneck in transition from Boomers to millennials. Millennials are coming up a GS-13 level positions, Boomers unable to retire just yet, Millennials cannot backfill those jobs until they get out. Though I think this is less of a GSA problem than an economic one and maybe just more evident here.

Pros

More technologically advanced than other government agencies. Much more lean, agile and less bureaucratic than other government agencies. Lots of opportunities to learn about the various types of commercial acquisitions.

Cons

High turnover at the top of the organization in recent years. Confusing communication/lack of explanation regarding re-organization and new work environment. Recent efforts to downsize resulted in extremely high workloads, disorganization, and very poor morale. Depressing to see a once great place to work to be in such disarray. (Many areas have gaps in knowledge and expertise due to mass exodus and reorganization). Top leadership seems out of touch with what GSA does and how it operates on a daily basis which has exacerbated morale problems. Feels “political” vs. the normal apolitical stance every government position I’ve had over the past 15 years I’ve been in the career field.
