Pros
Staying busy, you have plenty of work to make the work day go by fast. I worked in the Fleet Services division also known as Road Maintenance. The pace of work in that particular department is very fast. Considering that USX is the 2nd largest private trucking company in the USA you can see just how many breakdowns that they have a day. The phone rings constantly, you will hang up on a call then the phone will ring again. On average a "Road Maintenance Tech" will receive 100-125 breakdown calls a day. That may not seem like a lot, but once you make 2-3 or more outbound phone calls looking for service it adds up. The principal behind this department is simple: "Find services for the trucks and get them rolling ASAP while watching cost at the same time." The pay is good, considering the job isn't manual labor. You work in a nice climate controlled office with adequate lighting and ergonomic work stations. The LugNut Cafe is a good place to have lunch.
Cons
Very high turnover rate. In my five years at USX I had four different department managers. All four had different goals and ways to obtain the goals. I've listed the top five cons that I have. 1. Stress level. This job isn't a cake walk, it's highly stressful and if you have any concentration problems it isn't for you. 2. Opportunity to advance. This is pretty much non-existant because once your in a department your stuck there. Unless your department head is willing to sign off on your transfer. I personally ran into this problem and it cost me a chance to move up in the company. 3. Experience means nothing. If you have any transportation experience you might as well throw that out the window. I've been in the transportation industry my entire work career and others with less hands on experience got the nod on several occasions. 4. Buddy System. Yes there is a buddy system in place at USX, just like any other employer. 5. Insurance is way too high.
