Pros

In Davis, you are either an employee of UCD, or you are nobody. The town owes a lot to UCD and for that, you will be respected as an employee. The university is very good about families, flex time, vacation time, etc. I was excited to be in a community where so much research and teaching was occurring. They push their employees and they achieve excellent research in many areas because of that. The bottom line is that the UCD is a flexible employer, but at the same time demands a great deal of ingenuity and effort from its employees.

Cons

It is VERY difficult to break into the ranks of the employed. They promote a lot from within and this makes it difficult to even obtain an interview for many entry-level jobs. They do provide good benefits compared to other universities but do not allow staff to take classes for free. For some strange reason, they insist on using their own internal email program called geckomail. I heard a rumor they were going to switch to google mail, but that is unknown. Geckomail is bad, really bad. Also, unless you are interested in working on plants, there are very few jobs in other areas of research. UCD and also the town of Davis are very environmentally minded and always seem to be proselytizing about the environment, which can be frustrating when there are often more pressing issues at hand.
