Benefits allowed me to graduate with my doctorate without any debt and enough money to pay for necessities with a little left over. I feel like I have learned valuable skills that make me more marketable for jobs and made useful connections with professors.

The amount of work that a TA contract requires is highly variable between classes. In many, you are asked to work more than your contract is supposed to allow. While there is a strong union in place to settle disputes, it is clear that there is an exploitation of early-career scholars that rely heavily on the connections and good graces of the instructors they work with for long-term career success.
