Pros
--Surprisingly kind, friendly, and welcoming environment (esp. for academia!) --Affordable living --Beautiful scenery (if you're into fields and orchards) --Not *too* far from cool stuff (coast, Yosemite, the Bay, etc.)
Cons
--If you're not from the Central Valley it's an adjustment --Even if you are, Merced leaves a lot to be desired --Not great pay for Lecturers, although your dollar goes much further here than in any other UC town --Upper admin (at the UC-wide level) that generally doesn't respect Lecturers
