Pros
It can be a great place to work, if you’re in the right department. The environment at UCSB is generally supportive. For the most part, people are happy and take advantage of the campuses location.
Cons
Compensation at UCSB is well below market standard. Most of the jobs found here can be found elsewhere, paying 30-40% more. And don’t expect to get raises, every manager and every supervisor is quick to point out the budget deficit that UCSB is facing now, but apparently has been facing for the last decade or so as well. If you do end up finding yourself in a department that’s less than supportive, don’t expect help from HR. The campus is so afraid of being sued that they rarely take protective action for their employees, despite what they may say. The university is slow to try to implement technological advances. And I feel that this is largely due to our chancellor.
