Cons

Management only cares about timesheets, they have shown that they do not care about their employees and their wellbeing. I was in an accident that caused a serious concussion, and resulted in me not being able to work for the summer, and when I returned management immediately began to treat me unfairly due to my condition (I also have epilepsy which made it harder to recover). When I first returned back to work, I worked from home half days for the first 2 weeks, and the next 2 weeks I began to transition to full time back into the office. I continuously asked for any work or projects I could assist with, and was told there was nothing for me to work on, so for those first 2 weeks I mainly completed my required CPE. My first day back in the office, the managing director made a very insensitive comment to me that they were frustrated there were people in the office working 10 hour days, and there are some people that were not doing anything. This comment was clearly directed at me, and was very insensitive considering I physically could not work for long periods at that time. Since I returned, I noticed that alot of my work that I had the prior year were given to other staff (I do understand that my work had to be allocated when I was out, but I still expected to have some work after I returned). I still found myself with very little work during tax season. I had multiple review comments from one of the principals that I had taken too much time on some tasks, while they were aware of how my concussion had affected my cognitive function, and I found these comments were very insensitive to what I had went through. This showed that they did not care about how I was doing physically, but rather only cared about how quickly tasks got completed. Alot of the review comments I received were also very passive aggressive. These comments constantly made me feel that I could never do anything right, and I did not get any positive feedback at all during my time at this firm. On top of the darkness I was already feeling from getting hurt, receiving these comments only made me feel worse about myself. Management had me believing that it was my fault I couldn't keep up with expectations. Primarily being in audit, I ended up assisting with completing tax returns as management made it clear they didn't want to give me alot of work because they knew I couldn't complete as quickly as other staff because of my concussion. I knew there was work I could help with but they were concerned with the time it would take me to complete, so they chose not to give me any. I gave one of the tax returns I completed to the in charge to review, and they basically told me it was all messed up. This really upset me because I was not trained in tax at all, and to get that kind of comment on something I was not trained on was really unnecessary and unfair. After tax season was over, I found myself without any work to do, and I would reach out everyday for work. Since there was no work anyone wanted to give me, I did more CPE. I would always get talked to by the managing director about why I was doing alot of CPE. I explained that I have been asking everyday for work, and there was no work for me. Once again, I got a comment that there were concerns about how much time I was taking on some tasks. I got a very rude email one day from the managing director, that I have xx number of years experience, and that I should know what needs to get done, and I should be able to just jump on something that needs to be worked on. There was LITERALLY no work to be done. Ever since I returned, I had trouble dealing with the headaches from my concussion. I tried to work as many hours as I could during tax season, I got up early so I could work as many hours as I could, and there was no gratitude from the managing director that I was working more than I should have, just complaints that I was getting up earlier so I was able to take breaks as needed during the day. After tax season, I asked the managing director if I could reduce my hours because of my headaches. They agreed, but after the first day of me working the reduced hours, the managing director complained about the hours I was working, saying that the hours weren't "working" for the company, however these are the hours that were best for me physically. I ended up working an additional hour each day. Shortly after I began working the reduced hours, I was notified that I was being terminated due to there being no work. When I brought it up that I've been asking for work constantly, I was told that's because there was "time sensitive" work, so there was always work for me to do, but management refused to assign me work because they were only concerned with timesheets. Rather than reduced hours, management made no other effort to accomodate my disability. I think this pretty much covers my experience here, long story short I was treated unfairly and discriminated against by the firm, because I suffered a serious concussion on top of my condition of Epilepsy.

Pros

Close to home, great work-life balance after busy season because there's nothing to do. You will get the big picture and see a lot in an audit.

Cons

No work is assigned to you, so even in audit you will do tax work. You'll spend your days hunting for work, and then you volunteer to learn something new and they won't let you. Then you get yelled at for not having more billable hours. You pretty much have to sit at your desk don't talk, and if you have no people skills / willing to bring people down you'll move right up. The office is very toxic and HR is practically useless. They pride themselves on paying overtime, but they give you way below market vacation days. You also have 120 hours baked into your salary of overtime, so you get stuck working 14 hour days in busy season. 6 days in your first year and 9 days in your second year. You spend weeks on end with next to no work because your job is not transactional. They are better off giving 21 vacation days like every other decent firm does and doing away with the banked overtime because you end up getting less days.
