Pros

You have health benefits. And as long as you are not a supervisor, you are union protected.

Cons

Pay is horrible. Management treats their employees like robots. Graveyard shift workers are always left out of special events during the day. Also have the most work load and the least amount of staff to complete all tasks. If overtime happens, you get in trouble. And there is definitely favortism when it comes to promoting from within. People who have been there for well over a decade and know more about the department than most get passed over for a job that they do when the supervisor is not there. Someone who has been there for only a year gets the job because he's buddy buddy with his boss.

Pros

The job was fantastic and I very much enjoyed everything we did. The hours were great and it was the perfect distance from my home.

Cons

They waited until 4 days before my probation period was up, and brought me in a room with two supervisors and a random nurse and terminated me because “ I’m not a good fit for the team”. They say my clinical skills are impeccable and no one from the hospital had any complaints about me in any way. A few people decided for me that my personality was too big for their team to handle. That says a lot about management there. I’ve NEVER been terminated in 26 years as a paramedic, but I come to UNM with a big personality and they cannot handle it.
