Pros
Generally the people are all pleasant. It is a job where you definitely get a good workout. It is fast-paced and if you are willing to take on more responsibilities and strive to always do a good job you will be given every opportunity to do so. The benefits are wonderful and cover anything that could possibly go wrong even if you are just a part time worker. The pay gradually increases and has the potential to be very sustaining if you stay around for a long time. Opportunity to advance in the company to a driver is readily available at our center, maybe not a full time driver immediately but you will be given the opportunity to try to drive if you do your time and you work hard so that the management takes you into consideration.
Cons
Unfortunately, outside of peak our center does not keep enough people on staff -or- they do not push everyone on the staff to balance the work appropriately. They do take advantage of the harder workers (floaters) and let them handle all the slack in the building. Also, it feels to me like the people who think that UPS pays wonderfully do not pay attention to the fact they are being really screwed if they are just in it for the money during the first several years while waiting to be a driver. People say "Management sucks, don't enter it" but if your entire ambition is to just be a part-time supervisor as opposed to using that position as a stepping stone inside or outside of the company you are missing the point of becoming one. If you become a supervisor you are immediately making more money and learning more things about being in an administrative position within a company which is the primary way that you are ever going to move up to a position above that. You also are around to learn more about the operations of the company. I do feel like people are brainwashed to believe that driving is the only way to be successful in the company, but it is also a very taxing job and I think people would be wise to recognize that if they push themselves they can serve alternative purposes and make themselves appear more valuable in the long run. But the worse con is that if you work mornings, you work approximately 4am-9am most of the year and around Christmas start time is even earlier generally. The reason this is such a bad thing is that when you realize what I realized (that the pay is not that stellar when you are only working 20 hours a week) that you are going to need another job, your only options are part time jobs, retail/food service, and that every job that will pay over 12 dollars an hour is going to be second shift and you will have to split your sleep schedule 4 hours before UPS and 4 hours before your other job. Then when it comes around Christmas time, you are likely unable to hold both jobs at the same time because you simply wont get any sleep between UPS and your second job when you are starting at 1 am.
