Pros

Well funded company with interesting projects and a lot of opportunity for employees to learn. Were it not for the negatives, this would be the company best positioned to make cultivated meat at large scale a reality.

Cons

Upside is its own worst enemy. The company culture has become increasingly toxic. These are some of the issues: People treated as expendable: There are several employees who have quit without another job lined up simply because the environment was bad for their health. Finger pointing: Pointing out the mistakes of others to distract people from your own mistakes is considered acceptable behavior No leadership: There are managers who have gone months without communicating with a direct report. They don't respond to messages or support the people under them. However, these managers are skilled at flattering those above them, so they get promoted themselves. No integrity: Managers will acknowledge that they have people in their group that are an issue (lying/harassment) but rather than trying to fix it, the manager simply says the problem will self select out over time. There are only a small number of people that are an issue, but after multiple surprise RIFs managers don't want to remove a problem person because they might not be able to rehire. The hours are long and there are never enough people for the job so you can't afford to be short staffed. Even when a department is told they can hire for a position, often its denied last minute with no explanation. This is common knowledge, so people are nervous to lose even a single person.

Pros

UPSIDE is my first experience working at a startup and it's exceeded my expectations. It has all the benefits of a startup - flat structure, IC can achieve real impact, and minimal bureaucracy - without the toxic culture of other bay area tech startups. The company has a very diverse set of talent and the people here care a lot about the positive impact of their work, which makes the workplace experience very pleasant

Cons

Company direction and strategy is ever changing, people needs to be comfortable with navigating ambiguity

Pros

Building a food system so people can eat meat at scale without destroying the world has to be one of the most important needs of this generation alongside clean power and good health. I'd volunteer to advance this mission, so it's wonderful to also get paid to do it. Hard and challenging start-up work means fast-growth and zero dull repetition. Every single person cares about the mission. Very low politics compared to many companies

Cons

Not for everyone. We work hard, We have high expectations of ourselves, We're doing science that's never been done before, and that means you need to be OK failing, learning, and then succeeding. Don't come here if you just want a paycheck/payout or are going to be sad our snacks don't compete with your favorite profitable tech campus. But come if you want to better the world.
