Can be a good job for some - not for me - Program Analyst US Farm Service Agency Employee Review

Pros

Benefits are great and since they reclassified all program technicians to program analysts, the pay is great since you now have a latter up to CO9

Cons

If you're in an understaffed office, the workload can be overwhelming. Things can quickly get crazy when there's a major weather disaster and you need to start implementing disaster programs. FSA doesn't seem able to properly prepare their employees for implementing programs, but this could potentially vary depending on what state you're in. Overall, I wouldn't recommend working for FSA unless they made some major improvements to really support their employees. The programs could use a lot of improvements, too. You might do a ton of work for a disaster assistance program applicant, only to have the program pay the applicant a few dollars in the end and the applicant may even get angry for it.

Pros

Excellent job to have while raising a family. Maxi-flex schedule (9 on, 1 off) is very helpful for doctor appointments to not use up sick time.

Cons

Under hiring freezes, oftentimes working understaffed to meet numerous program details.

Pros

Good retirement benefits. Very flexible leave usage

Cons

Pay has fallen behind the private sector. Bureaucracy is bad. No vision for the future. Field offices generally have a good culture but that is where it stops
