Pros
good people, great benefits, and the mission (conservation) is solid. The program I worked in allowed for a lot of flexibility. I can work from home, and the agency is moving towards allowing employees to work on DEI in addition to their "day jobs" which is something I feel passionate about. Lots of opportunity to move around and work on special projects, do details, etc. Your mileage will vary depending on department and supervisor.
Cons
the organization and my program is highly disorganized. the bureaucracy makes it really challenging to be innovative and all the technology is behind the times and limited. it can be really frustrating to know you can perform better and be limited by policy. most managers and very high up leadership care, but the sprawling nature of the organization means initiatives for employee wellbeing don't always trickle down to your direct supervisor.
