Pros
The pluses to working for Gannett are getting a paycheck and having healthcare. And the staff - reporters, designers, photographers - mostly care deeply about doing a good job and they care about journalism. It's a good place to work if you just need a job. Healthcare plan is awful - high deductible, high premium.
Cons
The downsides are extensive. The company bills itself as caring and supportive. They constantly send emails urging the staff to "sell" and "represent" the brand, yet people who work for Gannett are shown every day how little they matter. 1% raises, on average, an undercurrent of fear of layoffs and no severance if they do lay you off. They offer a TPP, a transition pay package, which pays the difference between your unemployment check and your current salary for the same number of weeks as you've worked for the company. Gannett ultimately seems to want to replace all newspapers with USA Today and then have a small section of local content. Which means that journalists and editors will continue to be let go. This is not a place where you can easily advance. Try a different company if you want to work for one that will encourage and support you in your chosen career. If you do accept a job offer, hold out for a really good salary and get as much vacation as you can. Unless you threaten to leave and they really really value you, you won't get a raise or promotion.
