Pros
The best of the newspaper companies. Gannett is trying to change and become more Web focused to survive in the future, but many of the changes are silly departmental name changes etc. There is lots of opportunity for those that are willing to give everything to the company and move all over the country. It tends to promote within.
Cons
Hiring standards across the company are not very high, so each newspaper tends to have completely different hiring practices and levels of talent. Along with the rest of the newspaper world, newspaper budgets have been crushed. No department escapes it. While widespread layoffs are not common, when someone leaves, their position is left open, and someone takes on those responsibilities in addition to their own. The number of employees is rapidly being reduced, so the ones left are more stressed than ever.
