Pros
Great editors and colleagues, your work can appear in the flagship USA Today even if you work at a smaller publication
Cons
There are tons of articles out there that document accurately what it is like to work in a Gannett newsroom so I urge you to do your research. My addition to that: There is no room for financial growth. However you are hired in, that's where you will stay. There are no raises or salary adjustments for merit or to meet the increasing cost of living. There's a culture of making people who do get a pittance feel guilty about whatever small increase they receive. "You should feel LUCKY to have your job" The only path for career advancement financially is to get promoted. The process for this is a mess ---taking months and requiring edit tests and assignments that should be unnecessary from an internal candidate.
