Pros

Benefits (health insurance, 401K, stocks), gym, free coffee and lunch

Cons

The department you work in and who you report to completely directs your work experience. There are no structured performance reviews for supervisors and direct reports. Direct reports are expected to have an on-going conversation with their manager, which places a burden on the direct reports to manage themselves if their manager is not interested in helping them succeed. In many departments, there is little to no opportunity for career advancement. The only way to get a promotion or a raise would be to wait for your manager to move on, switch departments, or leave the company. The company culture is cliquey, which impacts communication. If you are not in with the "right" people, you are not consulted in projects and do not have the opportunity to do your job. This is particularly concerning when your job is to ensure that the state and federal worker health and safety regulations are followed. There is no formal HR grievance process for direct reports to use should they have any conflict with their manager. HR tells those with concerns that they have to "work it out" between themselves and their manager. Workplace harassment situations are common and even with multiple sources of proof (emails, witnesses, weekly reports), HR brushes off employee concerns.

Pros

UT has a strong mission and vision that makes the work feel meaningful and impactful. Leadership generally encourages a healthy work-life balance, and compensation and benefits are competitive. Employees are given opportunities to contribute and support important initiatives.

Cons

Psychological safety can be lacking, making it difficult for employees to openly share concerns or challenge decisions without fear of negative repercussions. There is also a noticeable lack of accountability in some areas, particularly among certain tenured employees who appear insulated from performance expectations despite demonstrating ineffective leadership and limited management capability. This can create frustration and hinder organizational growth and effectiveness.
