Pros

Very interesting work - the science is fascinating and is cutting edge -The junior staff are among the best I've ever worked with, and they're very flexible and adaptable. They are a huge help in facilitating the work, and are always eager to share their knowledge with folks who are interested in learning what they do. The amenities are really nice when you get to enjoy them: -Free cafeteria is top notch -The gym is well equipped and open to you whenever your schedule permits -The pool is a really nice amenity to have available -Variety of work you may encounter presents decent learning opportunities -Bonuses and RSU rewards are solid -Budgets allow for the opportunity to work with new technologies that might not otherwise be available at other institutions

Cons

-Leadership, in my experience, is condescending and will belittle you, even if you are a subject matter expert in a particular field or technology. -Junior staff don't feel supported enough to speak up, and are afraid of retaliation for escalating issues in good faith. -Salaries have stagnated and are lagging behind competitive rates for the area for candidates coming in with prior experience -Burn out is not taken seriously, and in my experience you pay a 'penalty' with missed opportunities if you prioritize your mental health over the job. -Leadership runs the lab like an academic institution and fails to acknowledge the value of people with industry experience. Myopic view of education vs. experience. -Leadership gets promoted at a much faster rate than that of their direct reports. The work that junior staff do are not rewarded appropriately and people are leaving as a result. -Generally, I've found the environment very toxic and problematic. The management team needs to be retrained on how they interact with their direct reports and treat those under them with respect and dignity. There is a lot of language thrown around that is passive aggressive, condescending, and teetering on what I would all inappropriate. -I've found my experience with HR to be unhelpful, and it's clear they don't take issues seriously enough, and their investigations to good-faith escalations of concerns to be lacking in execution and thoroughness.

Pros

UT has a strong mission and vision that makes the work feel meaningful and impactful. Leadership generally encourages a healthy work-life balance, and compensation and benefits are competitive. Employees are given opportunities to contribute and support important initiatives.

Cons

Psychological safety can be lacking, making it difficult for employees to openly share concerns or challenge decisions without fear of negative repercussions. There is also a noticeable lack of accountability in some areas, particularly among certain tenured employees who appear insulated from performance expectations despite demonstrating ineffective leadership and limited management capability. This can create frustration and hinder organizational growth and effectiveness.
