Pros

A number of my coworkers were excellent people but they generally fled the organization within a year for obvious reasons.

Cons

A useless bureaucracy managed with maximum dishonesty. Nobody was ever able to say quite what we did other than raise money. There was vague talk of our advisorial or administrative role in programs, but mostly just a lot of empty business lingo, meetings about other meetings, and desperate attempts to appear relevant so people would continue to donate. I was there under a year and more than a dozen people in substantial positions jumped ship.

We are very sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied during your short stay at UWBA. With unemployment in the 8 counties we serve hovering between 2.5% and 3%, we have seen a predictable amount of attrition. Particularly of concern to us are the people who have moved out of California entirely because they have no hope of ever buying a house here. That is a loss for the region as well as for us. Still, we are very proud that, on average, our employees have a tenure of 8 years (2017) . We are equally proud that among the questions on our annual climate survey that get the highest positive ratings are the questions about job satisfaction and business ethics. We see the perfect accountability and transparency score we were awarded by Charity Navigator (4 stars, 100%) as a independent, unbiased confirmation of staff opinions. By their nature, systemic solutions to poverty are long-term, collective impact propositions. As our recent community conversation series affirmed, United Way Bay Area is widely recognized for its vision, effectiveness, and competence in sustaining regional initiatives that provide jobs for youth, lift families out of poverty, and connect those in need with lifeline services. Pros

The mission is meaningful and the work itself can be deeply rewarding. Colleagues are talented, dedicated, and genuinely care about the community they serve. For the right person, that camaraderie carries a lot of weight.

Cons

Over the past two years, this organization has undergone significant and painful change. A revolving door of senior leadership, including the abrupt loss of key executives, created instability that trickled down to every level of staff. Layoffs followed, and then a steady stream of voluntary departures that leadership appeared either unable or unwilling to address meaningfully. Under new leadership, nearly every quality-of-life benefit that made nonprofit-level salaries feel worth it has been reduced or eliminated: fewer sick days, increased healthcare costs, loss of Summer Fridays, loss of Thanksgiving week, and a shift to more required in-office days. The cumulative effect is an organization that asks a great deal of its staff, in salary sacrifice and mission commitment, while systematically withdrawing what made that trade-off feel fair.
