Pros

Can be a good place to move up quickly…but only if you have a really hard work ethic, are willing to put in long hours, are ready to wear multiple hats and take on additional responsibilities without complaints or expectations of immediate reward Workplace renovation completes in April Ability to make a difference in the community Benefits aren’t great, but pay can be competitive compared to other local nonprofits

Cons

Work/life balance. If you are a 9-5 person with strong boundaries or want remote work options, move on. You can stay late and work extra all the time with no pushback, but if you show up late a few times and it’s noticed, expect comments. Leadership has different rules for themselves. Culture. There are real culture challenges that leadership is trying to address, but it’s been a long time coming and won’t be resolved anytime soon. Old school ways of thinking about culture and flexibility (or lack thereof). Lots of politics and in-crowds. Some great people will never move up because they keep to themselves while some people get promoted continuously. Leadership. CEO and VPs don’t listen to staff. They pick favorites and make a lot of decisions without asking for input. Some VPs are lacking in basic leadership and office professionalism. Holiday schedule is really lacking. You’ll never get compensated for working overtime, but you’ll always get vacation time deducted in full (even if you worked extra other days).

Pros

The mission is meaningful and the work itself can be deeply rewarding. Colleagues are talented, dedicated, and genuinely care about the community they serve. For the right person, that camaraderie carries a lot of weight.

Cons

Over the past two years, this organization has undergone significant and painful change. A revolving door of senior leadership, including the abrupt loss of key executives, created instability that trickled down to every level of staff. Layoffs followed, and then a steady stream of voluntary departures that leadership appeared either unable or unwilling to address meaningfully. Under new leadership, nearly every quality-of-life benefit that made nonprofit-level salaries feel worth it has been reduced or eliminated: fewer sick days, increased healthcare costs, loss of Summer Fridays, loss of Thanksgiving week, and a shift to more required in-office days. The cumulative effect is an organization that asks a great deal of its staff, in salary sacrifice and mission commitment, while systematically withdrawing what made that trade-off feel fair.
