Pros
Some of the best reasons to work for UHG include the variety of work - the company is so big that there are lots of different types of work to do, the plethora of job opportunities in the various business segments - there are dozens and dozens of office locations across all the business segments, the understanding of most management types for balancing of work and life, and the Rewarding Results program that rewards top-performers in the company. There is some great talent at UnitedHealth Group and working with talented folks is something that many can both appreciate and enjoy.
Cons
UnitedHealth Group has grown primarily due to corporate acquisitions. Because of this, the variety of technologies used at UHG is expansive and there are strong efforts to standardize and consolidate those technologies. Unfortunately, these efforts to standardize often trample over efforts to innovate and introduce new technologies or means of solving business problems. For some of the same reasons, communication of assets, ongoing efforts, technology innovation, and development efforts is very poor. System and work-effort redundancy runs rampant within the company, even though top management acknowledges it and recognizes that it needs to be resolved. Another downside to working at UHG is that the company's office locations span the country so that nearly all meetings that cross business segments or application teams are held via conference call. If a person prefers to work face-to-face with his or her peers, they may find it very hard to adjust.
