You are expendable and at the mercy of office politics. I sat next to a guy who literally showed up reeking of booze most days, would make incredibly offensive comments to coworkers, and just disappear at times but who KEPT GETTING HIRED FOR WORK just because he had some expertise in the medical field. It was insane. When I overheard a remark he made to a female coworker and reported it to my superior, I was told to keep my head down and mind my own business.
