Pros

Good work, life balance. IT salary is good for the area staying just above one large IT employer in Chattanooga and just below another large IT employer on average. Benefits and paid time off are good. Bonus plan is good for good performers.

Cons

IT staff has been reduced to a critical point. Outsourcing has hit Information Technology employees hard as application knowledgeable IT staff has been laid off and others have chose to leave. The remaining IT staff is challenged to do more and with those knowledgeable peers gone, the stress is high. Outsourcing partners are adequate at following directions created by Unum IT, but they lack application knowledge and even technical knowledge for many. Turnover seems high for our outsource partners as we often have to get accustomed to new people assuming responsibilities. Collaborative and open work environment creates challenges for developers due to noise and other distractions. Restructuring of jobs has created the appearance of NO career path in IT. Some entry level jobs considered IT are compensated too highly for having no technical degree or expertise thus inflating the entire IT salary structure.

Pros

Strong work-life balance, supportive leadership, and a collaborative culture that feels more people-focused than many large corporations. Hybrid flexibility, solid benefits, and long-term stability make it a great place to build a career. There are also good opportunities for internal growth and cross-functional experience.

Cons

Decision-making can sometimes move slowly due to layers of process and approvals. Compensation may not always be as competitive as larger tech-focused companies, and organizational changes or transformation initiatives can occasionally create ambiguity or shifting priorities. Like many large enterprises, bureaucracy can at times impact speed and innovation.
