Pros

They mind safety well, provide great scheduling flexibility to students, and the work is almost always located on campus. There are many aspect to Facilities and Maintenance, so a person can find all manner of work. The employees are treated well and the bosses do get to know them. Several times a year there events to show employee appreciation, some of these include very nice meals. They provide opportunities to move or advance from within.

Cons

For less skilled work, the pay typically starts at $8.00/hour, currently. Part time hours are strictly enforced to avoid ACA requirements for provision of health insurance, so income can be limited.

Pros

Academia is a more relaxed atmosphere than a for profit business. Most of the people I work with are very kind. And the summers are amazingly quiet.

Cons

The pay is very low. My position was just created and the base pay is $50k. However, the raises here only come if you leave your position and move to a different division within the university. It is commonly said that if you want a raise or a promotion you have to go somewhere else.
