Pros

Work schedule can be flexible depending on your advisor and deadlines. I have heard PhD students graduate with few publications. So that means their schedule is probably pretty loose. Cost of living is cheap so that's always a plus.

Cons

can be hectic sometimes and stressfull. My advisor is still working for his tenure so we keep pushing out papers. Last year (2012) I had submitted 6-10 papers to different conferences. Also, winter sometimes can be very bad.

Pros

Academia is a more relaxed atmosphere than a for profit business. Most of the people I work with are very kind. And the summers are amazingly quiet.

Cons

The pay is very low. My position was just created and the base pay is $50k. However, the raises here only come if you leave your position and move to a different division within the university. It is commonly said that if you want a raise or a promotion you have to go somewhere else.
