Typical Assistantship - Graduate Assistant Utah State University Employee Review

Pros

The university and my department are great to work with. Pay is low, but that is typical for graduate assistantships. Jobs are flexible and provide important and necessary experience for future job market. The graduate program is fully funded (so no student loans to pay back). You just have to white-knuckle your way through till you complete the program and get a job.

Cons

Graduate students are both students and employees. This can create an difficult intersection regarding expectations/work-load/academic pressure.

Pros

Academia is a more relaxed atmosphere than a for profit business. Most of the people I work with are very kind. And the summers are amazingly quiet.

Cons

The pay is very low. My position was just created and the base pay is $50k. However, the raises here only come if you leave your position and move to a different division within the university. It is commonly said that if you want a raise or a promotion you have to go somewhere else.
