Pros

Everyone will have a different experience depending on the department they work for. I work for the water lab and its great there. We don't have to worry about parking, politics are low, and we do not have the congestion of the students. The benefits are great at USU.

Cons

For staff members, there is not a lot of opportunity to climb the ladder. Its kind of like a dead end job (even if you have a PhD). This is because only faculty members with tenure take high-level admin positions. You have to pay for parking on campus and it is usually far away from your office

Pros

Academia is a more relaxed atmosphere than a for profit business. Most of the people I work with are very kind. And the summers are amazingly quiet.

Cons

The pay is very low. My position was just created and the base pay is $50k. However, the raises here only come if you leave your position and move to a different division within the university. It is commonly said that if you want a raise or a promotion you have to go somewhere else.
