Pros

- Not a hard job to do - Flexible for a student (Mostly)

Cons

-Poor direct compensation for working full time - Odd benefits that are only tangentially useful to some people - too many layers of bureaucracy - pay is controlled by separate department not related to current department, so raises are only once per year and don't keep up with inflation. - Training is only word of mouth and expectations can vary wildly from area to area. - Upward mobility is only determined by length of time at job and not necessarily by competence - Compensation by moving up is very marginal - mandatory overtime in the winter for snow removal @ 4 am on swing shift (shift ends at midnight)

Pros

Academia is a more relaxed atmosphere than a for profit business. Most of the people I work with are very kind. And the summers are amazingly quiet.

Cons

The pay is very low. My position was just created and the base pay is $50k. However, the raises here only come if you leave your position and move to a different division within the university. It is commonly said that if you want a raise or a promotion you have to go somewhere else.
