Pros

- Work alongside some really talented and smart people, and there is the value of excellence in every project - Good work/life balance, with the exception of a few busy weeks. Managers mostly focus on your work and don't micro-manage your habits, like lunch breaks. - People are generally very humble and hardworking - Nice office space with lots of common areas

Cons

- There were layoffs due to COVID-19, with less than a day's notice. Months prior, our CEO had mentioned that if layoffs were ever on the horizon, we would be notified, and a warning simply didn't happen. I had asked around the day before the layoffs if this possibility were there, and people told me no, because they were also blindsided. This showed me the lack of transparency and honesty in this process from the executive leadership that did know about it. - Little job security after this round of layoffs, as well as the layoffs in previous years - VSA overall lacks diversity, especially the leadership. The gender balance is also skewed with a strong majority of partners and creative directors being male. (Current stats: Executive Creative Directors are 7 men to 2 women/1 POC, Creative Directors are 7 men to 3 women/4 POC) 100% of our C-level leaders and partners are white (you can see on vsapartners.com). However, VSA has just been recently taking actions to educate themselves, and I hope that it'll lead to change! - My on-boarding process felt lacking, I was given one day of orientation with IT and HR, and then jumped right onto client projects without much background or resources. I felt the expectation to be valuable and productive on day 1, whereas the reality is, that requires intentional training and transition. It felt tougher than usual to be a new person at VSA. - Not a lot of company culture and events. Our time was very focused on billable work

Unfortunately, layoffs are sometimes a reality in the agency world, and over its almost 40-year history, VSA has at times found itself in the position of needing to reduce headcount. In some situations, we’ve given the affected VSAers as much as several weeks’ notice. In others, like the actions we took earlier this year as a result of COVID-19’s impact on our business, we have notified the affected VSAers on their last day. In either situation, we’ve received feedback that the approach was wrong. That’s understandable because there’s really no good way to conduct layoffs. Regardless of how well-intentioned and empathetic a company is in that situation, the end result is that talented, smart, and hard-working individuals are losing their jobs through no fault of their own. Any way you approach it can only soften the blow. It can’t make the experience a good one. Over time, we’ve combined our own observations with the feedback we’ve received to inform our approach to layoffs. It’s our belief that the shock of being informed on the day one’s job is eliminated is preferable to being in something of a limbo state for days or weeks. We understand, though, that neither results in a good outcome, and we’ve done our best to help affected VSAers transition out of the company as positively as possible given the circumstances.

Pros

This experience strengthened my ability to translate strategic concepts into thoughtful visual solutions while working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. It was an invaluable opportunity to grow both creatively and professionally.

Cons

While the experience was valuable, the fast-paced agency environment sometimes meant tight deadlines and long hours.
