Hi, this is Jason Collins, CTO at Vendasta! Thanks for the feedback! Though I didn't realize we ever wore suits.
For sure Vendasta is transitioning from startup to an excellent operating company. Part of the excitement of a startup is having a lot of visibility and input across a flat organization and discovering the processes and structures that work best. We've always worked hard to provide an environment that encourages experimentation and discovery and looked for ideas and innovation to flow from all staff, not from a top-down hierarchy.
It is true that as we make this transition we need to formalize our career path, and this is work we are very active on. We want our career path, and its implication to your own personal achievement, to be very clear and transparent. That said, the career path we are structuring is not about hierarchy and power. For example, we believe that the worst thing you can do is take a super-awesome software developer and make them a manager of people. The skill sets involved are utterly different and 9 times out of 10, you will completely drive the passion out of that individual. As we develop our career path, we want to ensure that people can continue to advance their personal achievement by exercising the skills they excel at and are most passionate about.
And hey, if becoming a people manager is something that sounds awesome to you and you have the skills for the job, we will probably be able to provide that. Just don't feel that's the step you need to take in order to advance at Vendasta.
Hope this helps,
Jason
