Pros

- Some very interesting technical problems being solved including large-scale data processing pipelines. - Development teams are, by and large, populated by intelligent, passionate engineers.

Cons

- The company's business model is inherently flaky, after this many "pivots" the appropriate term is "flailing". - They constantly pat themselves on the back for their "culture" but unfortunately it is pure bro culture. If you don't like drinking, or foosball be prepared to feel like an outsider. - What (very little) professional development opportunities exist are entirely self-serve. If you aren't willing to chase/guide your own development and put up a fight to obtain anything meaningful, you are unlikely to achieve much professional growth. - Compensation was very high for Saskatoon 5 or 6 years ago, but has not kept pace. Salaries are very much average to below-average for Engineers now. - "Flex time" and "Flex place" are hailed as examples of what a progressive workplace this is, however, both are so severely restricted as to make them all but useless beyond superficial use. - Hiring has been more about quantity than quality for the past few years resulting in significant degradation to the general developer skill level. - Extremely aggressive hiring policy not paired with any formal onboarding procedures, resulting in massive extra workload on existing employees to get new, often under-qualified, team members up to speed. - Unpaid and completely uncompensated overtime is very common. Management actively encourages employees who pull extra hours but do absolutely nothing to satisfy their legally mandated obligation to compensate them. - Management consistently overpromises and underdelivers on any topic of concern to employees. - Company claims to have a completely flat hierarchy but what really exists is a "shadow hierarchy" where raises and other perks (including stock options) are doled out only to those who are favourites of various elements of management. - Development teams are pressured to adopt complicated development methodologies instead of allowing them to use what works for their particular circumstances. - Flailing business model in conjunction with extremely aggressive hiring policy gives the clear impression of a company that is attempting to appear more successful than is actually true, likely with management pursuing an exit via acquisition. This puts management goals expressly at odds with those of employees looking to build a career at a stable, growing company.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a thorough review. I agree we have an awesome team that is very passionate and intelligent. They are what has made us so successful and enabled us to grow. We do pivot a lot--we are a fast growing company due to large market demand for our products. As we strive to become a 100M company, we feel very lucky to offer this unique experience right here in Saskatoon. This includes aggressive plans for hiring, and we pride ourselves on being a place that hires the best and the brightest talent. I am proud that we had five interns this past year, and more to come this year. We are proud to have a workplace that factors in time for training, learning and growing each other. Working here will never leave you bored or stagnant. Professional development is among our top priorities for our staff--we invest heavily in this via conferences, paid tuition, books, courses, etc. We have a highly motivated team that loves to learn--everyone is encouraged to seek out programs and education they find compelling. We maintain as flat an organization as we can at this size, though by no means do we claim to lack all structure. This means everyone is encouraged to express their ideas and concerns, you wont be told you can't take a holiday, and you don't have to punch a time clock or report in to a manager. We never ask anyone to work overtime and even finish earlier in summer, promoting a work/life balance that resonates with our employees. We're very proud of our culture and transparency, which has lead to some prestigious awards. This year we were recognized as being one of the best places to work in Saskatoon by Flow Magazine, in Deloitte's Top 50 Canadian Tech companies and in the Top 500 for North America. This happened because we hire great people who are innovative, intelligent and ready to make a difference in the tech industry! Of course, our culture (including things like lunches, social activities, yoga, etc) is what completes the package. I encourage anyone who has questions or is interested in Vendasta to stop in for a visit or drop me a line! -- Jean Parchewsky, Director of People Operations

Pros

Vendasta has a ton of very smart and driven people, I feel inspired and motivated every day working with this team. The product is making great advancements, and it's exciting to market such an innovative solution with very loyal partners. I've learned a lot working here and have had an overall positive experience.

Cons

Benefits for US employees could be better compared to US-based companies. With multiple acquisitions, working for various products can get overwhelming / priorities shift a lot - must be comfortable with a fast-paced environment.

We agree that we have a highly talented and innovative team here, and we're incredibly excited about the things they are building! We're disappointed to hear that our culture wasn't what you had hoped for. We take great pride in our culture and work hard to ensure Vendasta is a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone to learn, grow, and thrive. As for our leadership, they are highly experienced and confidently steering us in the right direction. While we appreciate all feedback, it’s a bit tough to address such a broad critique without any context. If there were specific moments where you felt we missed the mark, our inbox is always open. Thanks for your feedback! Wishing you all the best for the future.
