Pros

Great flexibility and variety, competitive pay, 401 K benefits started this year , don't need to be full time to get, just need to have worked a certain amount of hrs to qualify for. PTO given depending on hours worked. Gives you the opportunity to work at different places and find a clinic you might want to be permanent at. No need to ask for time off or worry about finding coverage since you just don't pick up shifts in that case! Opportunity to make more depending on shifts (overnights, swings, weekends) or if you take last minute shifts some of them sometimes have call-in bonuses. Overall love working for VSS more than when I was full time in private practice.

Cons

The Pro's outweigh the cons in my opinion..but here are some: Shifts can get cancelled on you anytime, even if you picked up the shift months in advance, and you wont get paid for it unless it's within 24 hrs of the shift when the cancellation occurs. So then you might be left without work/compensation on occasion. The type of person who does relief needs to be ok with this aspect. They need to be ok with uncertainty, always flexible, changing clinics regularly- not a lot of shifts in the winter. May need to be willing to drive farther for some jobs.

Thank you for sharing your experience with our team. We are thrilled to hear that you are enjoying the work you're able to do through VSS! Shift cancellations can be a pain. We work very hard to either get you the compensation you were planning on. In the event that your shift is canceled, please reach out to your Account Manager, they will help you get re-assigned to another location, or get you the cancellation fee you deserve. Remember, for doctors, you receive 1/3 of the shift as a cancellation fee if it's canceled with less than 1 week's notice, and reimbursement for the full shift if it's canceled with less than 72 hours notice. As always, if you have any questions about this, don't hesitate to reach out to your Account Manager for guidance. Thank you for being a part of our team!

Pros

Flexibility in scheduling, control over which shifts to take

Cons

I worked for this company for approximately 9 months. New employees have a 30-shift probationary period after which there is a review. I took as many shifts as I could, excited to reach my 30 shift review. When my manager informed me it was time to schedule this review, I asked how the meeting was to be compensated. I was informed that this review, as well as all employee-manager meetings, are uncompensated. In the employee handbook, annual reviews were stated to be an essential part of our job, which I interpreted as mandatory. When I asked them to clarify (in writing) whether employees were expected to attend mandatory meetings without pay (and CC'ed HR on that email), they immediately backtracked and said these meetings were NOT mandatory, just that I would not be eligible for a raise unless I participated. Which still feels like it should be illegal. After this I lost all respect for them as a company. I am not willing to do ANY amount of work off the clock, including a 30 minute meeting. I have never worked for any company that expected me to do unpaid work-related meetings. How hard did they have to work to find these loopholes in the labor laws? No amount of scheduling flexibility, for me, is worth violating the very basic principle of being paid fairly for my time.
