Pros

VCU offers generous PTO at 24 days per year. Really wonderful coworkers who are passionate about the students and higher education.

Cons

It's still the government. Plan for mountains of red tape and a glacial pace when it comes to trying to change things. While there are wonderful dedicated employees at VCU, there are also a number of people who have worked there for 30+ years who are just flat out incompetent and/or lazy. They also seem to be strategically placed to create roadblocks and logjams toward any sort of innovation. Employees are rarely given salary increases.

Pros

They care about the employees. There are multiple efforts to support everyone, it is a welcoming environment, HR is very supportive.

Cons

VCU is incredibly bureaucratic and poorly ran. Things move slow, very slow. More slow than normal universities should. It isn't just "oh this is academia, things move slow." It's legitimate poor management across multiple levels of leadership.
