Pros

The best part about working as a grad student at VCU is that you are assured a solid education in becoming a knowledgeable pharmacologist. Their training programs in demanding, but if you stick with it until the end, you will be an sought after expert in your field.

Cons

As with most professions in life, people within the department can be political to the point of being conniving. Some people are protective of their work and will do what is necessary to ensure that that their research stays funded and progressing. There are no signs of open hostility, but you have to watch out for the subtle ones.

Pros

They care about the employees. There are multiple efforts to support everyone, it is a welcoming environment, HR is very supportive.

Cons

VCU is incredibly bureaucratic and poorly ran. Things move slow, very slow. More slow than normal universities should. It isn't just "oh this is academia, things move slow." It's legitimate poor management across multiple levels of leadership.
