Underpaid, overworked - Full Time Instructor Virginia Commonwealth University Employee Review

Pros

Access to labs and equipment

Cons

Where to begin? Entitled students, backstabbing coworkers, fraudalant and exploitive bosses. You will not ever get promoted or get raises unless you pander to both your students AND bosses. This place is pure politics, so if you enjoy being abused by students, coworkers and program directors, go for it. They will move the goal post and change school policy when it suits them. There are teachers making less than half of what professors make and teaching twice the number of classes. The abuse of adjuncts continues unabated. Anyone who goes to HR about these problems doesn't keep their job.

Pros

They care about the employees. There are multiple efforts to support everyone, it is a welcoming environment, HR is very supportive.

Cons

VCU is incredibly bureaucratic and poorly ran. Things move slow, very slow. More slow than normal universities should. It isn't just "oh this is academia, things move slow." It's legitimate poor management across multiple levels of leadership.
