      Pros

      The people I work with are easy to get along with, but this depends on the department and the environment your leadership creates. Small sum provided to full-time faculty for research each semester. Some of the students really try, illustrating their appreciation for your time/energy--those relationships are rewarding.

      Cons

      Politics and bureaucracy. Everything is so much slower than it should be, some of the rules or even opinions of higher-ups can be detrimental to the objective of learning, salary is not enough to compensate for the teaching, service and research expectations. Many students don't genuinely appreciate your time and energy and barely try, making it feel like a waste of your life.

      Pros

      They care about the employees. There are multiple efforts to support everyone, it is a welcoming environment, HR is very supportive.

      Cons

      VCU is incredibly bureaucratic and poorly ran. Things move slow, very slow. More slow than normal universities should. It isn't just "oh this is academia, things move slow." It's legitimate poor management across multiple levels of leadership.
