Pros

Many different peoples from many different walks of life. This makes for an enriching atmosphere working alongside those from southwest Virginia and also the students from the more urban centers of Virginia. Working for an organization that caters to 20-somethings can bring about a pretty enjoyable day. I personally worked in Dining Services for the university which meant interacting with the students day in and day out. VTs has some of the best food in the country which brings great customer satisfaction which makes life as a server quite the breeze.

Cons

The employee turnover rate that comes with working at a university makes for very difficult scheduling on both managements part and on those salary workers who have a bit more vested in the university as an employee. This makes for a bit of tension between the employed students and full-time workers. This tension can at times layout the atmosphere of the day. (As full time workers still have to drive in hellacious snowstorms while students who live a quarter of a mile away don't want to make the 5 minute trek to work that day.)

Pros

The experience was great. The PI was amazing and kind and I learned a lot, definitely would do it again. It yielded great results for me such as publication. I recommend for medical school or graduate school.

Cons

Difficult to justify if you don’t plan to have a research career, graduate or professional school because the pay is lower than other positions available in Blacksburg.
