Pros

Some great research being done at the institution with lots of opportunities to get involved. Very supportive atmosphere. The higher ups in the Mechanical Engineering department are focusing on larger and larger grants, so there are partnership opportunities with industry available.

Cons

The GRA contract process can be a bit stressful as you have to renew your contract every semester. If you have an advisor who isn't on top of his/her paperwork, then you can find yourself in a last minute scramble to get funding. Constant writing of proposals and publications is a must in order to assure that your lab gets sufficient funding.

Pros

The experience was great. The PI was amazing and kind and I learned a lot, definitely would do it again. It yielded great results for me such as publication. I recommend for medical school or graduate school.

Cons

Difficult to justify if you don’t plan to have a research career, graduate or professional school because the pay is lower than other positions available in Blacksburg.
