Pros

Great company to work for with a lot of opportunity to grow. They offer a generous compensation package, management is responsive, most crew members are fantastic to work with. Office people are friendly, helpful and prompt. You can tell that by and large, everyone believes in the company mission and it shows in company growth. They've gone far above and beyond in keeping crew informed and safe in the midst of a pandemic, and have addressed concerns immediately where ever they have come up. They are doing the best they can with a very challenging situation. More companies would do well to pay attention to the ones doing this right.

Cons

Communication remains a challenge; that has been compounded by pandemic challenges. I really wish this were a thing that would get more attention. If one of the goals is to cut waste, and reduce errors, addressing communication issues would be a very good place to start. I also belive they will get there.

Thanks for sharing your feedback! We love hearing that our compensation package is motivating, and that your experience working alongside your colleagues has been positive. Our crewmembers are our greatest asset; their passion for our mission is key to our success and is part of what makes working at Vital Farms so meaningful. We appreciate your thoughts around opportunities we have to enhance communication with our crew. So far this year, we've spent over 80 hours communicating with crew through Raise the Barn meetings, SLT videos and chats, and huddles at ECS. Communicating to a crew that is geographically dispersed has always been a challenge, made more difficult by COVID. We are committed to Leading with a Growth Mindset and continuing to create positive experiences for our crew through enhanced communication. We hope you'll share any ideas you have in this area with your direct manager, or bring them to the Talent Team! You may have heard that we have partnered with the National Diversity Council to help guide our work in DEI. Just last week we wrapped up our DEI survey and are starting focus groups. What we learn in these forums will help us to create our game plan for increasing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Vital Farms in 2021. To get more involved in our DEI efforts, please reach out to Caitlin S.

Pros

On the positive side, you’ll meet a lot of great people throughout the company. The flexible time off is appreciated and helps with work-life balance. The quarterly perks and discounts on company products are also a nice benefit for employees.

Cons

There are several concerns when it comes to leadership and company culture. There seems to be a major disconnect between employees, managers, and higher-level leadership, including some C-level executives. HR often appears to favor underperforming employees instead of holding them accountable, which can be frustrating for strong performers. There is also a noticeable lack of direction, consistency, and accountability among managers across multiple departments. While the company talks a lot about its values, those values do not always seem to apply equally at the Director, VP, and Chief levels. Leadership needs to address these issues and remove ineffective leaders before more hardworking and high-performing employees decide to leave for better opportunities elsewhere. Favoritism also appears to be a significant issue within the company culture. In some cases, underperforming employees or leaders are protected instead of being held accountable, which negatively impacts morale and trust across teams. There also seems to be a pattern of bringing in ineffective leaders from other companies whose management styles do not align with the company’s stated values, further contributing to cultural decline. If leadership wants to retain strong employees and improve the workplace environment, there needs to be a more honest evaluation of performance, accountability, and leadership effectiveness at every level of the organization.
