Pros
The best thing with HGST in San Jose is the people. They are hard-working, technical, data driven and mostly friendly. Majority of the employees are long timers and former IBMers which I think is a good characteristic. The management is generally influenced by the IBM culture and they are for the most part technical, respectful and caring. The 1st to 4th level managers of mine were easy to reach and were among the best people I have ever reported to.
Cons
The HDD technology is outdated and it is unclear how long manufacturing can run a profitable business in San Jose. It is therefore a high pressure environment and demands intense engagement which can turn out exhausting after a while. The machines are also very old which creates much friction in manufacturing. The career growth opportunities are few and somewhat limited. The HGST/WD medical benefits must be among the worse in the bay area. Vacation times have to be negotiated with the manager which may not be such a bad thing.
