One of the better retailers, but still a crappy retail job. - Supermarket Assistant Waitrose Employee Review

Pros

Generally treated with a bit more respect by managers than other retailers. You have a far better chance of your voice and opinion being heard than other retailers. Newer managers are very involved on the shopfloor and will do the job with you. There's an annual bonus, although in recent years it has gotten smaller and there's an increasing chance of it being taken away altogether.

Cons

Constantly understaffed. When someone leaves, they're not replaced. The hours just disappear. Customers are often very entitled and managers often give in to their ridiculous demands because customer service is more important than staff loyalty. Holiday requests are rejected 50% of the time. Managers often contradict each other so no matter what you do, you're probably doing it wrong. Older/longer serving managers will hide in the back rooms while you do all of the work. But they'll still take all of the credit.
