A cross between the cultures of academia and state government - Instructional Support Wake Technical Community College Employee Review

Pros

Helping students from very diverse backgrounds move their academic and career ambitions forward; good work / life balance. Administration does seem to look out for the staff in most cases (for example, when community college funding dropped state-wide following the 2008 economic meltdown, Wake Tech was able to avoid measures like mandatory furloughs and downsizing).

Cons

Campuses are not terribly convenient to the more densely populated areas of Wake County, necessitating long commute times and working in places without much around in terms of restaurants and shopping; very limited resources compared to 4-year state schools means absolutely no frills and in some cases, sub-par offerings (tutoring centers are way understaffed, libraries are underfunded and have little autonomy, adjunct instructors are sometimes not skilled or particularly knowledgeable).

Pros

Cohesive team that cares about students and provided room to learn. Its a technical school. They are willing to work around your schedule, and even let you cross departments to help with projects. Being exposed to new stuff is fun.

Cons

Typical, hallowed, scholarly politics. Don't do this, wait for them to do that, when a task item would be beneficial to students or faculty.
