Pros
Immediately after graduating from NSU, I began working on a cardiac step-down unit. I enjoyed bedside nursing. I remained at this position for 2 years, until an injury to my back prohibited me from continuing the at times strenuous workload. In need of a job that required more ‘lighter-duty’ work, I found myself in post acute case management. My job as an RN CM began in a positive light. I have learned a lot in the 7 years I have been in case management and I do continue to learn something new daily still. I found a position I greatly enjoyed in being a case manager. At times, we did have a wonderful team in our department. I was in charge of creating ‘How-To’ manuals for new employees, or refresher materials for older employees.
Cons
Many discussions were had with management regarding ways to improve moral in our department or solutions to avoid repeated errors, but to this day, management has never seemed to be supportive in our efforts, nor has she ever required the continuation of things that we found to work for our department. This continued disappointment in management has caused all but one last long time employee to leave. Management also seems to be a significant factor in why new hires also do not stick around. Sadly, looking back at the beginning of my career in case management and comparing our department to how it is now, the toxic environment is the cause for my need to move on. Our needs and concerns fall on the deaf ears of a supervisor who’s known toxic traits have always caused new comers to never stick around. Today, I am the only employee stil around that started several years ago. It has now become clear to me that I too must move on, as the department has become unbearable to remain working in.
