Pros

- Competitive salary (but average bonus scheme) - Decent training

Cons

(1) KPIs and IT system - Emails turn red in email inbox if you can't respond to fixed, tight KPI deadlines and there is no mechanism on the IT system to give a reason for inability to respond within the 4 hour telephone call KPI (i.e. training, client meeting, etc.) The IT system itself is ageing, slow and the programs regularly crash (averaging 2-3 reset computers and 2-3 lost documents per week). (2) Investment-driven propaganda - Since the sizable investment in the company, it has focused more on targets and getting large number of clients in rather than quality. The company's view of 'ensuring quality' is monthly appraisals (albeit nicknamed 'extended conversations') and regular meetings warning of the 'loop of doom' (which 'spells dismissal'). From having a discreet but effective focus on performance, the firm now has performance-focused computer backgrounds with efficiency-focused slogans (which you can't remove) and multiple workplace posters 'warning of the doom loop' and that the company needs exceptional performance at all times (with a cartoon figure of the CEO with a highlighter pen underlining the need for good performance and quality). It felt less like a quality, professional company from month-to-month due to the obvious demand for 'results' to justify the large investment and more like a results-driven call centre. (3) Lack of client contact - 99% of the work is telephone and email based, meaning the job feels more like a call centre than a regular law firm. Some will like this but the majority of lawyers enjoy face-to-face contact and won't enjoy merely seeing, on average, around 2 clients per year (the company charges for physical outcalls). (4) Low morale - Over a 6 month period, overall legal team morale nosedived. From a challenging but manageable workload, staff members saw their client lists grow substantially and the focus on 'performance' (i.e. KPI's) increase. I've seen emotional staff members calling for instant meetings with managers due to lack of support/overwhelming workload. This is largely because of a failure to actively recruit (i.e. a focus on bringing clients in but a failure to then ensure there are sufficient staff to cover within a reasonably short time) and a lack of confidence in managers to address this. (5) Poor office space - The company initially had two large rooms to seat its legal team. Within months of investment, the entire legal team moved into one sole room and the downstairs soundproof 'pod' for client/team meetings was taken down. From a bright, airy, spacious desk area in both rooms, it became six to a row and too noisy (with not enough hot desks) in one, sole room. I experienced 7 desk moves (all but one was on short-notice) in a space of less than 1 year.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to post a review after you have left EW. It is great to hear that you valued the competitive salaries we offer our Employment Law Advisors and the regular bespoke training that colleagues across the legal team receive. Your review has been shared with the Director for our Legal Services Department so that we can learn from and respond to your comments. I am sorry that you have left us feeling that there are such a number of cons to working here. If you had still have been with us, we would have encouraged you to speak to your manager or a member of the HR Team about your concerns, as a number were easily fixable (such as simply being able to switch off the red flag reminder in your inbox). This summer we have improved the appraisal system in response to colleague feedback and the recent colleague spot survey demonstrates an overwhelmingly positive response to the new approach of informal monthly 1:1s with your manager. We have also extensively consulted colleagues across the business regarding our values and we are promoting them to colleagues in response to what they said; we deliver brilliant service, we are optimistic, we have integrity and we are one team. The legal team is a very high performing team experiencing growth due to our continuing success. In the most recent colleague survey earlier this year, 85% of the team agreed that EW is a great place to work, therefore your comments about morale are very concerning to us. In the office the various specialist legal teams sit together along with a paralegal and admin support and we do regularly meet clients face to face without additional charge. We are proud of our offices and have posted some pictures of our environment including the legal office above. I am sorry that you feel as you do having left EW. I know many lawyers really enjoy the environment and challenging variety of work at EW and love not having the pressures of billing, credit control and practice development for example. Thank you again for taking time to post a review and we wish you well in your future career.

Pros

Career opportunities are good. Salaries are decent. There are some nice individuals within the business.

Cons

Awful, awful dictatorship style management from the top down. Massive labour turnover. An utterly ridiculously political environment. Some leaders in the business are more concerned with escalating their own image and financial worth within the business and they are happy to use you as cannon fodder. Lied to, on a number of occasions. Told there would be a secure job for us after restructures, only to find out some of our jobs had already been recruited for and then individuals previously told there would be a place for them at WN have then been made redundant. They literally couldn't care less about your wellbeing if they tried... They have just launched a wellbeing charter - which would be great. However on recent group meetings there has even been ridiculous things like a 'car park hierarchy' where the senior people in the business get to park closer to the door, and the minions have to park further down the car park. Awful, awful, awful, toxic and damaging environment.

Thank you for taking the time to write this feedback. We're so sorry to hear of your experiences and can assure you that a great deal of work has been carried out recently to set the foundation for a positive culture within WorkNest, including the articulation of our Values and holding people to account if they are not aligned to these. We are also progressing our leadership development and I can assure you that no such hierarchy exists today. Thank you for your contribution and we wish you well in your future plans.
