Pros
- Access to great lectures, seminars and talks. - Many great mentors and leaders in their field - good for creating relationships for mutual benefit. - External perception of a Yale job is positive and will make you stand out when moving on. - New Haven is a nice little town. - There is no official policy on holidays, work hours etc, which can either work out positively or negatively, based on your PI and your own personal work ethic/discipline/disposition etc.
Cons
- This particular position offers little benefits, and low pay - you are not tied to any union or provided extra benefits, such as being a research assistant. This is despite doing pretty much the same job as research assistants, in terms of work load, projects, expectations etc. - There is no formal structure of mentorship - you have to get lucky if there are people in your lab willing to teach you. - PIs can be rather absent, and there is not much accountability, progress management or reporting. - Internal politics of labs have been known to be detrimental to work environment.
