Pros

Young adult participants are eager to do the work to create opportunities for themselves and their communities There are incredibly talented, passionate and capable people who work for Year Up who live deeply into it's mission Long standing program sites with strong community ties and company relationships allow Year Up to fulfill it's commitment to closing the opportunity divide. When the program focuses on doing what it knows how to do well (small cohorts of learners with consistant staff coaching and mentorship, taught by staff who are invested in supporting individuals who have been historically excluded from the education and "professional" business sectors- it it an immensely successful program)

Cons

Culture of agreeability, many people who are able to rise up in the organization do not live into it's values Many staff are condescending and patronizing to the program participants (who they hold to standards they are not modeling) Poor change management deteriorated trust within staff and ability to deliver outcomes to participants Wages are not comparable to other non profits for direct service staff Expansion between 2020-2022 without adequate safety nets in place prioritized desire to be THE workforce development program over ability to provide high quality programming, internship opportunities, and secure jobs for participants. Program is over promising and under delivering.

Pros

- Competitive compensation - Excellent organizational leadership, passion, and culture - Programs really make a difference in the students' lives

Cons

Any new site comes with some growing pains and so we are still figuring some things out as we go. Could use a little more direction or "best practices" from other sites or leadership. But again, these things come with any new sites!
